The electric car continues to be a hot topic in Japan . A slew of influential Japanese companies like Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi (whose i miev is pictured above), or Tokyo Electric Power have now started an initiative aimed at creating a global standard, dubbed CHAdeMO, for high-speed battery chargers for electric cars

Meet Tsutenkaku, a robot that looks like a tower (video)
Japan has a lot of different robots so why not develop one that looks like a tower – even if it may make no sense whatsoever? That’s what a total of seven Japanese companies thought and built the Tsutenkaku Robotto [JP] (Tsutenkaku roughly translates to “tower that extends to the sky”). And as the name suggests, the robot is pretty tall: 170cm.

New technology heats up cell phones when callers get agitated
I can’t think of too many use cases for this, but they did it: A team of researchers from the University of Tokyo (Japan’s MIT if you will) has developed a technology that makes it possible to “physically” convey emotions from cell phone to cell phone.

Messaging Security Company Cloudmark Raises $23 Million From Nokia, Others
Cloudmark, a provider of messaging security solutions, has scored a massive $23 million funding round led by new investor Summit Partners and joined by Nokia Growth Partners, the mobile giant’s venture capital investing arm.
Existing investors Ignition Partners and Industry Ventures also participated in the round, which is the first financing Cloudmark has closed since 2004, when it raised $11 million from multiple VC firms. The new funding is said to have been used to assist in Cloudmark’s acquisition of former rival Bizanga.
Cloudmark’s specializes in spam, phishing and virus protection software for wired and wireless networks. The company, founded in 2001, claims to currently protect over one billion inboxes in over 190 countries around the world. Cloudmark says it counts over 100 of the world’s largest service providers, including more than 75 percent of all major service providers in the United States and Japan, among its customers.
On its impressive client reference list: Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, EarthLink, Swisscom, Tele2, XS4ALL (KPN), as well as social networking company MySpace. Cloudmark is privately held, is headquartered in San Francisco and boasts offices in London, Tokyo, Beijing and Hong Kong.

Maps are among the more invaluable travel tools. Android/iPhone apps are nice, but sometimes analog is just the best way to go.

Video: Metal Gear Solid Arcade 3D in action
We’ve covered Metal Gear Solid 3D (whose first playable version was announced by Konami last week) twice so far , and now it’s time to look at the game in more detail. Konami is still in the middle of optimizing the gameplay (which is based on Metal Gear Online ) and hasn’t fixed a release date yet

CGM Night: CrunchGear visits Otaku party in Tokyo (photo report)
Being based in Tokyo has its advantages, and one of them is being close to Akihabara , the world’s paradise for all things geek: Video games, anime, manga, Cosplay , figures, maid cafes etc. etc. And over the weekend, I was fortunate to be invited by one of Japan’s most famous otaku (and Japan) culture bloggers, an Englishman called Danny Choo , to “CGM Night”.
