PostHeaderIcon EMIEW2: Hitachi updates its cute humanoid robot

We last blogged about EMIEW2 , a two-legged robot made by Hitachi, in July 2008 . The main selling point was (and still is) an array of 14 microphones integrated into his head, enabling him to identify three different human voices simultaneously .

PostHeaderIcon JBL makes slight changes to iPod dock lineup

When you’ve been making iPod and iPhone docks since the beginning, what is there to do but tweak the design every once in a while? That’s JBL’s situation, and these “new” docks are pretty much what you had before, but no one would choose the old ones over the new ones

PostHeaderIcon Meet baby humanoids M3-synchy and M3-neony

The JST, Japan’s Science and Technology Agency , announced [JP] the development of M3-neony (pictured above) and M3-synchy today, two advanced baby-like robots. While “neony” (derived from “neonate”) is intentionally designed to look like a newborn, “snychy” just stands for “synchronous communication” (but as you can see, he looks like a baby, too)

PostHeaderIcon Hands-on: D&D on the Microsoft Surface

I just returned from the Microsoft campus (well, I stopped for a panini), where students from Carnegie Mellon University are showing off their awesome project , a version of D&D that runs on the Surface . Now, before you start rolling your eyes, just recognize that this isn’t just a holy grail for tabletop gaming nerds. I mean, it’s that too, but really it’s a proof of concept that shows how fun and intuitive something like this can be, and how accessible a team can make it.

PostHeaderIcon Review: Sony Bloggie MHS-PM5/V pocket HD camcorder

Short version: This camcorder is certainly small, and the swivel head can be handy, but the lack of digital zoom hurts, and the poor video quality, focus trouble, and low light performance pretty much sink this little bugger. Cute, though. Features: Swivel head for easy vanity shots 1080p resolution (720p at 30/60fps also available) Built-in USB plug 360-degree lens accessory (extra) MSRP: $169.99 Pros: Very compact Nice screen and layout Swivel head works great Cons: Video quality pretty bad No close focus No zoom Full review: I saw this little Bloggie at CES and was impressed by its form factor.

PostHeaderIcon Scientists create coevolved Predator and Prey bots

Some scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne have built “evolving” predator and prey robots designed to, in short, learn from each other. Read that again: While we’re worried about Taylor Swift and and Lady Gaga, robots are now teaching each other how to hunt us.
