Google Mobile App Update Brings Voice Search Support For iPod Touch

Google has submitted a new version of its Google Mobile App for the iPhone platform (iTunes link), and the fresh app now finally boasts built-in support for Voice Search on iPod touch devices (2G or newer).
Version 0.4.5.3281 also brings improved stability when using Voice Search on ‘restrictive networks’ and is also said to make Search by Voice completion detection function a bit better. Other than that, the update brings a number of bug fixes, one that fixes pasting into the search box and one that should prevent the app from crashing when you do a search for ‘@’.
Final Fantasy for iPhone: First trailer and new screenshots
In case you haven’t heard already, Final Fantasy I and II are heading for the iPhone. Originally released in Japan in 1987 and 1988, respectively, for the NES, it took a while for the now legendary RPGs to go America, but they did (on various platforms). And now Square Enix is planning special versions for the iPhone/iPod touch, both in Japanese and English.

Watch Obama’s State Of The Union Speech Live From Your iPhone Next Week
The White House has announced on its blog that they have released an official iPhone / iPod Touch application dubbed ‘The White House’ app (here’s the iTunes link).
The application comes packed with content, including the latest news items, videos, photos and blog posts from The White House. One feature that stands out is live video streaming, which enables iPhone and iPod Touch owners to watch the President’s public events at the White House as well as other events like key speeches and press briefings in real-time.
Next week, U.S. President Barack Obama will address the nation, and his State Of The Union speech will be broadcast live both from the White House website right here and from the iPhone application.
One thing: check the name of the app to make sure you download the official one when you search from your phone. Hint: it’s the one you don’t have to pay for.
In the coming weeks, the White House says it will also launch a mobile website at mobile.WhiteHouse.gov, which will be optimized for any internet-enabled mobile device.

India’s SMS GupShup Raises $12 Million For Twitter-Like Social Network

SMS GupShup, a Twitter-like service in India that is primarily accessed via SMS, has raised $12 million in funding led by Globespan Capital Partners with existing investors Charles River Ventures and Helion Venture Partners participating in the round.
The latest capital injection brings SMS GupShup’s total funding to $37 million.
Launched in April 2007, SMS GupShup (spawned from Webaroo) serves 26 million users across India. The startup has seen rapid growth in users primarily due to the immense popularity of mobile devices in India. According to the startup, there are 550 million mobile phone users in the country and only 50 million web users. With a 10 to 1 mobile-to-PC ratio and SMS serving as the most popular communications platform, the market is ripe for SMS GupShup to take off. SMS GupShup currently processes over 480 million messages a month and accounts for 5 percent of all texts sent within India. The new funding will be used for expand into other markets such as the Philippines and Indonesia, for product development and to hire new staff in engineering, advertising and marketing.
In fact, the mobile social network has even attracted the attention of leaders in the space, like Facebook. Last year, Facebook partnered with SMS GupShup to powere and deliver its users’ status updates via text messages. And besides partnerships, SMS GupShup also has an advertising strategy. Over 100 advertisers currently run on the network including local insurance provider ICICI Lombard and international brands like Puma, Microsoft and Cadbury.
India is a huge market for social networks, with Facebook, Orkut and even Twitter vying for a share of the growing number of web users who are increasingly flocking to social networks in their day-to-day routines. But clearly, SMS GupShup has tapped into the mobile side of social networks and is seeing success from this in India. It should be interesting to see how SMS GupShup will fare in other countries. It seems that in developing countries where mobile phone usage is much highers than web-usage the service is sure to take off. But the question remains if the service could ever take off in Europe or the U.S., which seems to be Twitter territory.
Apple’s App Store: From 2 To 3 Billion Downloads In Just Over 3 Months
Apple this morning announced that more than 3 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store by iPhone and iPod touch users worldwide. This comes nearly 9 months after it first hit 1 billion downloads served, and just over 3 months since it reached the 2 billion downloads mark.
No doubt, the holiday season helped increase the number of downloads so rapidly. But still: 1 billion additional downloads in 3 months and one week is just incredible.
When the 2 billion mark was reached, Apple also said 85,000 apps were available in the App Store at the time, but the company chose to stick to download numbers only for this announcement, although they said 100,000 apps were published to the store separately at the beginning of November 2009.
Steve Jobs in a statement, said:
“Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months–this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”
Nice jab there, Steve, and excellent timing with the official announcement of Google’s Nexus One phone just around the corner.

ThinkFlood Answers Our Prayers and Unleashes RedEye: Universal Remote for the iPhone
It’s as though He came down and said to MobileCrunch: “Ask and you shall receive.” We asked for this device just under a month ago and whoopee — ThinkFlood has delivered. Specifically, we wanted a universal remote because why the hell should we be using regular remotes anymore? ThinkFlood’s RedEye remote system fits the bill, works well, and is loaded with features, but it comes with a price tag of $188.

Video: Jack Dorsey Talks Square And I Buy Him Coffee With It
As we first reported over the summer, Twitter creator Jack Dorsey has a new project. Originally known as “Squirrel,” the name has been changed to Square, but the idea remains the same: A hardware/software combination for mobile devices (launching first for the iPhone/iPod touch) that allows vendors to easily accept and process credit card payments. Our full post on Square is here.
I had a chance to catch up with Dorsey today at the new Sightglass Coffee (which Dorsey is an investor in) in San Francisco. In the video below he talks a bit about the idea behind Square, and then we do a demo in which I actually buy mine and Dorsey’s coffee at Sightglass (one of the merchant launch partners for Square). It’s a bit hard to see the iPhone’s screen due to the daylight, but you can easily see just how fast Square works for transactions. Simply put, it’s amazing.
Also note how I can sign with my finger on the iPod touch’s screen. And I can request to get a receipt via email, which I enter the first time, but the app will remember every time you come back and use the same credit card. Also coming in the future is a way to send a recepit to your phone immediately via SMS. And that can also be used to verify that it is actually you making the transaction. You can also associate a picture with your credit card account through Square’s website so that a vendor will know it’s actually you authorizing the transaction. There is a lot to love here.
Below find some pictures of Sightglass which for now is just a coffee stand in the SoMa area of San Francisco, but will early next year morph into a very large cafe.
